Frequently Asked Questions
Will I experience side effects from teeth whitening?
Home whitening
kits may cause sensitivity, which usually goes away after a few hours.
If your teeth are already sensitive, these kits may be uncomfortable to use.
Seeing a dentist before going the DIY route will ensure that the home whitening
method is safe for you.
How long do teeth whitening results last?
If you follow the hygiene advice described above, your results could last 12
months or longer. Many patients need a touch-up after several months. In-office
whitening tends to have more intense, longer-lasting results than home bleaching
kits.
Is teeth whitening safe for everyone?
Professionals do not recommend these treatments for women who are pregnant or
breastfeeding. Children younger than 16 should not use these kits and will need
to verify it is safe with us during a consultation. If you are allergic to
peroxide, you should not have your teeth whitened.
What should I do to prepare for teeth whitening?
The peroxide formula can worsen existing oral health issues such as cavities and
gum disease. You should have these problems corrected before whitening your
teeth. Keep in mind that these products will not whiten fillings, crowns,
veneers, and other forms of dental restoration.
Will teeth whitening work for very dark teeth?
This procedure is most useful to correct yellowing. Individuals who have brown or
gray discoloration can seek a different procedure to obtain a whiter smile.
Options may include veneers, bonding, or crowns.
Why do teeth become stained?
Teeth whitening is a popular procedure because many people experience
discoloration of tooth enamel over time. Tannin, a substance in certain foods
and beverages, is known to cause yellowing. Smoking and certain medications can
also stain the teeth.
